Catalina Island High Density Housing
The project requires the development of an urban housing scheme that explores the potential for site, which is located in the city of Avalon on Catalina Island. Vehicular traffic is limited to golf carts due to the small size of the island. The units are designed to maximize views across the site and provide the more units with corner views. There are specific user groups that require different unit types: the SRO, one bedroom unit for young or retired couples, and the two bedroom unit for vacation rentals. The project is of Type I construction, with a concrete column grid that goes from the underground parking to the roof. The grid is expressed on the exterior facade, contrasting with the aggregation of units, which shift off the grid. Fireplaces are carried all the way out to the roof terrace, where residents have the best view of the Pacific Ocean.
